In this week’s YouTube video, I give you three reasons you should masturbate and foster your sexual wellness. Go check it out! And be sure to subscribe while you’re there!

As always, if you’d rather read, here’s the Cliff Notes version of the video.

First and foremost, masturbation is a normal and natural act. It’s nothing to feel ashamed or guilty about. Period. End.

Moving forward, I want to propose:

3 Important Reasons to Masturbate

Masturbate Because It’s Good for You

We are sexual beings. Therefore, our brains and our bodies have positive responses to intimate physical touch, sex (whether with another person or by ourselves), and orgasms. Orgasms, especially, create a positive body response, regardless of how they’re achieved. Which means masturbation gives us some MAJOR health and wellness benefits.

Let’s start with the brain. Orgasm causes a chain of events that release a lot of brain chemicals, but I want to talk about dopamine and oxytocin. Dopamine is involved in our reward circuit and feeling pleasure. Majorly involved. Oxytocin counters the stress hormone, cortisol, which impacts weight loss, aging, mood, and more. So, basically, because of oxytocin, more orgasms equals less stress. It’s a win-win.

I go into way more detail in the video, so check it out if you want to know the neuroscience behind it

Beyond these benefits, masturbation also helps us:

  • Sleep better (an orgasm is just as effective as an Ambien)
  • Improve circulation
  • Reduce pain
  • Relieve period cramps
  • Eliminate headaches

Masturbate Because It’s Good for Your Relationship

Masturbation is good because it teaches us what gets us off. And if we learn what gets us off, we can show our partners how to get us off. If we learn what brings us pleasure, then we can show our partners how to bring us pleasure. And the more pleasure shared between partners, the more they bond (there’s that oxytocin again) and the better their relationship.

If you tend to masturbate one particular way, I want to encourage you to spice up your masturbation routine. Learn other ways to touch yourself that feel good. And take that knowledge back to the bedroom and share it with your partner. Doing this gives you new and fun ways to experiment with your partner (if you’re stumped on what to do, check out my post on female masturbation).

Experimentation in the bedroom, doing new things when you make love, well, it does wonderful things for your marriage. Because we like new things. We like the novel. And we get bored as fuck with the same old all the time.

Masturbate Because It’s Good for Your Orgasms

There’s an old adage that says if you don’t use it, you lose it. I bet you didn’t know that saying was referring to your lady parts.

Yep. It definitely is.

If you don’t use the muscles surrounding the vagina, the same muscles that spasm when you orgasm, they start to weaken. And when they weaken, your orgasms aren’t as strong and don’t come as easily.

But when engage your pelvic floor, when you do your Kegels, when you masturbate on the regular, you keep your pelvic floor strong, which keeps your orgasms strong (it also helps prevent incontinence, bladder prolapse, and uterine prolapse). What’s more, without use, the vaginal walls atrophy, losing their elasticity and reducing their ability to release lubrication, manifesting in vaginal dryness and painful sex.

Masturbation also impacts your orgasm by giving you more control over them. When you masturbate, you can learn how your body responds to pleasure. You learn what happens when you orgasm. Pay attention, and you can begin to recognize what muscles engage when you climax and start playing around with those sensations.

With practice, men can learn to delay their orgasms this way and women can learn how to have orgasms more easily. While orgasm control is not a quick process, it’s nearly impossible to achieve without masturbation.

So go. Rub one down.

Now.

And reap the benefits.
