The other day, I answered a reader’s question regarding my thoughts on being bald or bushy. Today, I have another reader question about pubes. This one specifically about how to get rid of them.

If you’ve ever tried to shave your pubes, you know it’s not an easy task. You also know, if not done right, it can lead to an uncomfortable mess, filled with bumps, redness, irritation, and itchiness.

But if you’re like me, and 1) like to keep things pretty tidy down below, or 2) have pubic hair that must be shaved if you wear a woman’s bathing suit… Girl, I feel you. My bikini line grows a good inch or two beyond the edge of my panties, and shaving, no matter how much I hate it, is a must between May and September.

So sit back. Grab a beer. And learn the method I use to shave my pubic hair. A method I’ve tweaked, and dare say nearly perfected, since I was in college.

What You Need to Shave Your Pubes

Oh how I loved those panties…

To get started, you’re going to want to have a few things on hand:

  • Shaving Cream: I use Aveeno Therapeutic Shave Gel with Oats and Vitamin E. There are two kinds of Aveeno shaving gel, this is the one with the dark blue lid. Look in the men’s section, as that’s where it’s normally located. If you can’t find this, choose a non-scented, gentle shaving cream, ideally one with some calming agents.
  • Razor: You’re going to need a sharp razor with multiple blades. Shaving your pubes is not the place to save a buck with an old school, single-blade Bic or a six-week old razor you’ve been sharing with your partner. You will regret it. I speak from experience. Choose what you want, but I currently use Harry’s Razors, which are 5-blade. Again, you find these in the men’s section.
  • After Cream: You need some sort of aftercare cream to reduce bumps and irritation. These will often burn a little when you put them on, as they have an astringent to kill any bacteria that can lead to bumps, as well as a soothing agent. The best retail option, in my opinion, is Bikini Zone Medicated After Shave Gel. I used this shit for years. Now I make my own. We call it Taint Butter. You can find the recipe at the bottom of the post.

How to Shave Your Pubes

If doesn’t matter if you just need to trim the edges to keep stray hair from sneaking out of your bathing suit or if you want to go completely bald, there are specific things you can do to get a clean, smooth shave without the razor burn.

Trim It Up

First, reduce the amount of amount of swipes you need to take by trimming your hair before you shave. This is especially important if you’ve gone all-natural for awhile and you want to go bare. The longer your pubes are, the more difficult the pubic area is to shave. So grab a pair of clippers and cut that shit short.

Soften the Hair

Don’t shave as soon as you get in the shower or bath. Instead, wait five to 10 minutes before you start, giving the hair a chance to soften. I normally take my full shower before I start shaving, and shaving my vajaja is always the last thing I do.

Lather and Shave

Put a thick lather of shaving gel where you want to shave and have at it. Start shaving in the same direction as the hair. I’m not going to tell you to shave against the grain, as it increases the risk for ingrown hairs. But I will confess that I shave against the grain. I find it’s the only way to get the nice close shave I prefer. But I do take the majority of the hair off in the direction it grows first, then do a second shave in the opposite direction.

Get in the Nooks and Crannies

I can’t talk much about shaving men. I’ve never shaved my Hubby’s cock and balls. But I have shaved my pleasure parts for damn near 25 years and I’ve waxed a lady friend or two. And I’ve learned there are some areas of the vulva that are not the easiest things to shave. Starting at the top, the area around the clitoris is a little rough, as much of the hair on the public mound grows toward the clit. Just take it slow. And rinse your razor blade often.

Then you have the edge of the lips. I pull my lip to the side, flattening it out. Then run the razor up the line between the outside of my outer labia and the inside of my outer labia.

And, lastly, don’t forget the taint and ass. There are always a few (or sometimes a bunch) of hair around the anus. You can shave that hair, too! I find this hair easiest to address from my hands and knees, reaching between my legs to shave it.

Shaving Aftercare

My hair grows quick. This is a day after shaving.

Don’t think you’re done just because you’re hairless. The key to keeping your skin calm and bump-free is all about the aftercare. Right after you shave, put on whatever it is you’re using as an after cream (remember, the recipe for my Taint Butter is below).

Then, the next morning, put it on again before you get dressed.

If you wear brief style underwear, make sure the leg-hole elastic isn’t too tight. If it is and rubs against your freshly shaven skin, it’s likely going to irritate it, leading to bumps and the god-awful itch you sometimes get.

And then, the day after that, two days after your initial shave, shave again. An every-other-day routine works best for me. Tweak it to what works best for you. But you don’t want to wait too long. Many of the bumps that occur the few days after shaving the bikini line are ingrown hairs, hairs that are trying to break the surface of the skin, but can’t.

The every-other day shave keeps those ingrown hairs at bay, reducing the bumps and keeping your private parts as smooth as possible.

Molly’s Taint Butter Recipe

This makes a bit less than two ounces.

  • 10 drops Geranium oil
  • 10 drops Lavender oil
  • 6 drops Lemongrass oil
  • 6 drops Tea tree oil
  • 1/4 cup Aloe Vera gel

Mix well. Apply after you shave, and in the morning before you put on your panties. Or boxers. Or briefs. Whatever. If it burns too much, add more Aloe Vera and a few more drops of lavender.
